How to Upload Videos on VLC to iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

VLC for iOS is now live on the App Store but do you know how to use it after installing the app? Learn how to upload videos on VLC to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch using this very simple tutorial.

In one of my previous posts, I’ve already talked about the return of VLC, the most popular free video player, on the Apple App Store after being pulled out two years ago due t0 some third-party licensing issues. Now, VLC is back once again as VLC 2.0 with an improved interface and a bunch of cool new features like Wifi Upload, Airplay support, video filters, and many more. Still a consistent top app in the App Store in terms of download, the new VLC 2.0 can play almost all video format (MKV, AVI, and MPEG to name some) without needing to convert your videos before uploading on your iPhone, iPad, or iPad Touch.

So, if you’re done installing the app on your device, follow the next steps to upload videos on VLC and start playing your favorite videos instantly.

Upload Videos on VLC (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

There are two ways to upload videos on VLC. You can either choose (1) the standard way by using a cable connector or (2) using the native Wifi Upload functionality of VLC.

Option #1: Using a cable connector

  • Connect your iDevice (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) to your Mac or PC and open iTunes. (You may download iTunes here just in case you don’t have it installed yet)
  • On iTunes’ left bar menu, select your device. Select the Apps tab at the top menu as shown on the image below.itunes app
  • Scroll down to the bottom until the File Sharing section. Select VLC app and start adding your videos by either (1) clicking the Add button at the bottom or just (2) drag and drop your videos from your computer to the VLC video list.vlc on itunes file sharing
  • Go to your device, open the VLC app and start playing your uploaded video.

Option #2: Using Wifi Upload

  • Make sure your iDevice is connected on the same Wi-Fi network as the computer you’ll be uploading from.
  • Turn on the “WiFi Upload” feature of VLC by tapping the VLC logo of the appvlc ios wifi upload
  • On your computer’s web browser, type in the IP address and port number of the VLC server running on your iOS device (like the one shown above)
  • Click on the “Upload files” button or drag-and-drop your files onto the browser. Wait for the file upload to finish.vlc wifi upload files
  • Go to your device, open the VLC app and start playing your uploaded video.
