|Globe’s new Nano-SIM card|
Globe Telecom, tagged as the country’s leader in postpaid plans, has just announced to start selling their new nano-SIMs in Globe Stores starting this month of September.
What’s a nano-SIM?
Nano-SIMs are the latest generation of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards specifically designed to cater a thinner set of future smartphones and tablets expected to hit the market soon. When compared to the currently used micro-SIM available in the market, the nano-SIM is 40% smaller and only measures 12.3 mm wide, 8.8 mm high, and 0.67 thick. This can be very helpful for smartphone manucturers in creating thinner devices since a smaller SIM can also mean more space for other components like a larger battery, additional memory, or new mobile ports.
Last June, it can be recalled that Apple became victorious over the nano-SIM standards battle between other mobile phone giants – Nokia, Rearch In Motion (RIM), and Motorola. This makes the next generation iPhone 5 among the first few tech devices to use the new nano-SIM card. Despite its new design, the new nano sim still offers the same functionality and backwards compatibility as all current SIM cards existing.
Once it hit the stores, this will make Globe the first Philippine telco to offer the said technology to Filipino subscribers. Expect that Smart Communications, another big Philippine telco, to start offering the same nano sim cards soon too.
Here’s the official statement by Globe published in their official blog site:
“Once again, Globe pioneers in bringing the latest technologies to Filipino mobile phone users as we offer the revolutionary Nano-SIMs in our Globe Stores with the availability of newer smartphone models using this type of SIM very soon. With the Nano-SIM and its stunning features and specifications, our smartphone experience will definitely be taken to another level,” said Martha Sazon, Head of Globe Postpaid.
